This report, distributed in February 2003, offers an overview of the input of 3,600 people who participated in Opportunity Works Community Brainstorming Sessions. It includes a description of participants; a description of how we described ourselves; our families and our communities; themes that emerged; a catalog of strengths, problems, opportunities, and threats in the community; and bold ideas for action. This information can be used for environmental scan; needs assessment for community/region; or specific queries can be made of the data.

This
report, from Dr. Allen Hays, of the University of Northern Iowa,
summarizes some of the major issues involved in defining and analyzing
poverty. Because it is a brief summary, it does not delve into the
complexity of each of the issues that it raises. Instead it provides
a useful road map through the maze of problems and issues surrounding
poverty in this community and in the nation as a whole. It includes
diagrams and a brief bibliography. Available

As OpportunityWorks conducted Brainstorming
Sessions,
major points of discussion centered
around employment opportunities for residents, the need for better
paying jobs, the need for jobs that meet the skills of residents
and the need for a better educated and trained workforce. In order
to gain a better understanding of the situation surrounding these
topics, OpportunityWorks asked the Institute for Decision Making
(IDM) to conduct an analysis of available labor force and employment
data for this region. The result is a report focusing on three
areas: an analysis of wages, an analysis of existing occupations
and the educational attainment of residents with an examination
of potential underemployment in the region.
